Statement:

Timothy Wilson's photographs are often mistaken as paintings. Early in his long career, artists he respected suggested that he continue with a style that he developed, one which obscures boundaries between painting and photography, that emphasizes shape and atmosphere over content or locale. This became a hallmark of Wilson's work.

Wilson chose rock and house foundation surfaces as a primary focus early on, which he sees as abstractions akin to the action painters of another era. His inspiration is to capture the artistic movement and sensibilities of surfaces that people may pass by without a glance. Seemingly mundane rocks he sees as a world of abstract and powerful images, a kind of serendipitous alchemy.

His interiors and botanicals often capture only parts of objects, conveying a sense of mystery which provokes questions from viewers. Timothy Wilson explains that he wants to eliminate all but the essential visual core, thus creating images that are unique expression of what he sees.
